The Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Federal Republic of Somalia has firmly opposed the draft Resolution on Allocation Regime under review by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). The proposed resolution seeks to establish quotas for tuna and tuna-like species, spanning the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of member states and international waters.
In his statement, the Minister emphasized the ongoing challenge of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Somalia’s resource-rich waters. Despite the abundance of tuna in its EEZ and surrounding areas, Somalia has struggled to benefit economically, as distant water fleets continue to exploit these resources.
